Hundreds of illegal migrants including woman and children living in harsh conditions on the outskirts of French port Calais. The French town’s migrant population is growing steadily. Latest estimates reveal that their numbers is around 3,000 and their makeshift tent and tarpaulin camps, known as “jungles”. Remarkably, though, the prevailing mood among migrants is an indefatigable optimism. Everybody asked believes they will make it to England.

According to the UNHCR about 3,000 migrants live in and around Calais in makeshift camps – three times the number at the beginning of the year .The European director of the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) described the situation as shameful and warned more people will die in the refugee camps in the coming weeks as temperatures plummet.

Refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, and Eritrea steadily descend on a migrant camp in the French coastal town of Calais. They hope to gain entry to the UK, just 21 miles away across the English Channel. But in May, French police destroyed their camp and told the migrants to go elsewhere. And so they moved… across the street.

About £360,000 (€500,000) is being pumped into the site for men, branded The Jungle2, after a previous makeshift camp was destroyed. Plans to add running water, street lighting, public toilets and pre-fabricated shelters, will make the site “official”. They are part of plans to make 10,500 more lodgings for asylum seekers across France.
